About This Event
TSARC Monthly Educational Webinar Series
The Tanzania Surgical Association Residents' Chapter (TSARC) is pleased to invite you to our monthly educational webinar series. This session explores the essential role of nutritional support across all phases of surgical care.
About This Webinar
Nutritional status is one of the strongest modifiable predictors of surgical outcomes. Yet nutritional assessment and support remain underemphasized in many surgical training programs. This webinar bridges that gap — taking participants from bedside screening tools through complex clinical scenarios, with practical guidance at every step.
Learning Objectives
- Apply validated nutritional screening tools to identify at-risk surgical patients
- Understand the metabolic stress response to surgery and its impact on nutritional needs
- Compare enteral and parenteral nutritional strategies and their appropriate indications
- Recognize and prevent refeeding syndrome and other nutrition-related complications
- Develop individualized nutritional plans for complex surgical patients including those with fistulae, sepsis, burns, and cancer cachexia
Topics Covered
Pre-operative Optimization
- • Nutritional screening with SGA, MUST, and NRS-2002
- • Immunonutrition with arginine and omega-3 fatty acids
- • Modern fasting guidelines and carbohydrate loading
- • Preparing the malnourished patient for surgery
Peri-operative & Post-operative Care
- • Metabolic stress response: ebb and flow phases
- • ERAS protocols and early post-operative feeding
- • Enteral access types (NG, NJ, PEG, jejunostomy)
- • TPN vs PPN: indications and monitoring
Clinical Challenges
- • Energy (25–30 kcal/kg/day) and protein targets
- • Refeeding syndrome: prevention and management
- • Enterocutaneous fistulae and short bowel syndrome
- • Nutrition in sepsis, burns, and cancer cachexia
Monitoring & Transition
- • Weight trends, nitrogen balance, wound healing
- • Transitioning from PN to EN to oral diet
- • Discharge planning and home nutritional support
- • Long-term supplementation post-bariatric/gastrectomy

Sessions
Pre-operative Phase: Optimization
Identifying nutritional risk using validated screening tools (SGA, MUST, NRS-2002), the role of immunonutrition with arginine and omega-3 fatty acids, modern preoperative fasting guidelines with carbohydrate loading, and preparing the malnourished patient for elective surgery.
Dr. Paul Mazuta
Intra-operative and Immediate Post-operative Phase
The metabolic stress response to surgical trauma (ebb and flow phases), hormonal shifts after injury, ERAS protocols with early post-operative oral feeding, and selecting the right nutritional route — enteral access options versus parenteral alternatives.
Dr. Paul Mazuta
Clinical Challenges and Specialized Care
Calculating individualized energy and protein targets, recognizing and preventing refeeding syndrome, managing enterocutaneous fistulae and short bowel syndrome, and tailoring nutritional support for septic, burned, and cancer-cachexic patients.
Dr. Paul Mazuta
Monitoring and Transition
Tracking recovery through weight trends, nitrogen balance, and wound healing markers. Safely transitioning from parenteral to enteral to oral feeding, and planning long-term supplementation after bariatric and GI resection surgery.
