The Tanzania Surgical Association's annual Surgical Outreach Camp concluded successfully last week in Mwanza, having served over 500 patients from the Lake Zone regions.

The five-day camp, held at Bugando Medical Centre from January 5-9, 2026, brought together 35 volunteer surgeons from across Tanzania to provide free surgical care to underserved communities.

Camp Highlights:

  • 523 patients screened
  • 187 major surgeries performed
  • 156 minor procedures completed
  • 12 surgical specialties represented
  • 50+ medical students participated in training

Common procedures included hernia repairs, thyroidectomies, mastectomies, and various pediatric surgeries. The camp also provided an excellent learning opportunity for surgical trainees.

"This camp embodies the spirit of TSA - service to our nation and commitment to reaching every Tanzanian who needs surgical care," said Dr. Sarah Macha, Camp Coordinator.

We thank all volunteers, sponsors, and the Bugando Medical Centre team for making this camp possible. Planning for the 2026 second quarter camp in Dodoma is already underway.
