The Tanzania Surgical Association's annual Surgical Outreach Camp concluded successfully last week in Mwanza, having served over 500 patients from the Lake Zone regions.
The five-day camp, held at Bugando Medical Centre from January 5-9, 2026, brought together 35 volunteer surgeons from across Tanzania to provide free surgical care to underserved communities.
Camp Highlights:
- 523 patients screened
- 187 major surgeries performed
- 156 minor procedures completed
- 12 surgical specialties represented
- 50+ medical students participated in training
Common procedures included hernia repairs, thyroidectomies, mastectomies, and various pediatric surgeries. The camp also provided an excellent learning opportunity for surgical trainees.
